Later that day, the team put their plans into action. The herd of kelpies swam effortlessly forward, making quick progress against the river cave’s strong current. Their long, sinuous bodies carried over a hundred fighters between them. Alex still couldn’t get over the image of the kelpie herd’s massive bodies elongating until they resembled monstrous snakes. Each kelpie now carried at least ten fighters on their back with ease. Freaking amazing.

“Not amazing, just reality,” Larry snarked. “I thought you studied ancient history in college?” Larry eyed Alex doubtfully from his position, crouched between Lir’s massive shoulders. “Kelpies can stretch their bodies to accommodate as many warriors as needed when heading into battle. It’s one of their ‘things’.”

Alex rolled her eyes. “I studied ancient human history, you dork.” She patted the slick side of the kelpie as they rode. “Not supernatural history … no kelpies or unicorns, vampires or trolls … or talking dogs, for that matter, in any of my college history courses.” She tilted her head in consideration. “Although, I have to say, the classes would have been a whole lot more interesting if they did include those things.”

Larry snickered, then started in surprise when Crazy Sam poked his head through a stone wall to their right.

“You’re almost to the nest, you buncha yahoos,” the ghost whispered, his leathery face crinkled with worry. “And the goblins are expecting ya’ll. Lotsa angry little green men with pointy weapons in the cave up ahead.”

Well, shit. They must have a leak, Alex brooded. This was supposed to be a surprise attack; someone at the Crossroads had warned the goblins they were coming. They would have to deal with the traitor later, though.

Alex shook her head to clear her mind, then faced forward, gaze intent and body tensed for action. “Show time,” she whispered.
